A Restful Mountain Retreat

Home can be a restful retreat, a place to get away and escape into the beauty of nature. This family wanted their rural home to fit their contemporary lifestyle while embracing its simple aesthetic and highlighting the grand oaks, rolling hills, and valley vistas. We listened.

A low, covered breezeway with strange roof angles was replaced with a raised, single-height louvered roofing system to open the view. Bright and elegant, it coordinates with the home’s exterior, and the louvers can be fully closed to keep out the elements.

A new louvered pergola offers partial to full coverage in Los Altos Hills.

Dramatic Design Features:

Fire Safe

Matching the home’s existing siding, roofing, and redwood decking with WUI (Wildland Urban Interface) compliant materials retains the quaint mountain appearance while making it fire-resistant.

New-Found Functionality

A 146 square foot addition with raised ceilings dramatically increased the size of the kitchen, adding storage and creating a space where the family can cook and dine together. The glass door and large windows offer an inviting view from every angle and fill the space with natural light.

“We aimed for an intentional nod to nature without changing the bones of the house. It has the same feeling now but it is so much more open and livable.”
